Details are below:

The University of Arizona Coconino County Cooperative Extension Service is taking applications for the 2005 ARIZONA MASTER NATURALIST / MASTER WATERSHED STEWARD PROGRAM.

This will be the third year that Master Naturalist classes have been offered. The Arizona Master Watershed Steward Program is a partnership of the University of Arizona and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The strength of these programs together will offer residents of Coconino County and surrounding areas an opportunity to become highly valued volunteers who are knowledgeable about the environment, natural resources, and local and statewide watersheds. A better informed and active citizenry that promotes stewardship of Arizona’s natural environment are key goals of this program.

Classes meet once per week and will begin on Thursday, September 15th at 1:30 pm at the U of A, Coconino County Extension offices, located at 2304 N. 3rd Street. There will be two Saturday morning field trips that will be counted toward the volunteer requirement.

This intensive, 50-hour, adult-oriented course will teach participants about watersheds and water resources in Arizona. In addition, participants will learn the basics of birding, climatology, ethnobotany, forest health, geology, hydrology, interpretation, invasive species, soils, wildlife habitat, water quality and water management among other topics. Classes are taught by UA Extension staff as well as and other professionals from around the state.

A formal schedule will be available by late August.

Participants successfully completing the program, who wish become certified Master Naturalists and Watershed Stewards will be expected to donate 40 hours of volunteer service, regardless of the track, or combination of tracks, chosen. There are a wide variety of approved service opportunities available with a number of local institutions, agencies, and non-profit organizations.
New this year: Class members will donate a minimum of 8 hours of time to an Extension facilitated, class restoration and monitoring project.

The cost is $150.00, $40 refundable after completion of the 40 hours of volunteer service.

Some work-for-class type scholarships may be available.
