Fossil Creek Weekend

HomeLogo.gif
Come join Grand Canyon Wildlands Council in an effort to remove non-native crayfish from Fossil Creek during the weekend of November 11-13, 2005. Fossil Creek, on the Mogollon Rim, has recently been the focus of a large restoration effort to enhance habitat for native fish and revive the native ecosystem. Fossil Creek is located near the town of Strawberry off Highway 87 approximately 45 miles south of Flagstaff and 100 miles north of Phoenix. We will meet at 4:30 on Friday, November 11 at the Strawberry Market. The event will end with lunch on Sunday, November 13.

Fossil Creek produces an average flow 1,000,000 gallons per hour, at a steady 72 degrees Fahrenheit at the spring source. Crayfish have shown to be detrimental to aquatic systems by predating on fish and their eggs as well as increasing sediment in the water column. This is going to be a fun-filled event that will allow you to experience a beautiful place, meet new people and make a difference. Meals and drinks will be provided.

We will have to hike up mile or so to the site so bring hiking boots orshoes and sandals to get wet, a backpack, water bottle, warm clothes, and a sunhat. We will be camping so bring your tent, sleeping bag, pad, and a headlamp with extra batteries. We will provide all the equipment you needto remove the crayfish. Ambient temperatures may vary from warm days to cool nights, so come prepared with light weight pants, cotton long-sleeve shirt, long-underwear, pants, jacket and warm hat for chilly nights. Please bringa camp plate, eating utensils, and a coffee mug. We will bring extra water to fill water bottles, but come prepared with at least 2 liters of water.
