Black Footed Ferret Spotlighting Event November 16-18

Catch me if you can! AZGF photo.

Greetings to AZ Master Naturalists from Black Footed Ferret Recovery HQ in Seligman!

Unfortunately we had to cancel our spotlighting for the month of October due to rain causing the roads to be impassable. However, we are hoping the weather will be more cooperative for our November spotlighting effort. We will be spotlighting on the nights of November 16 – 18. Spotlighting will be conducted from 8:00PM to 4:00AM and we are looking for volunteers to help us with this event.

If you would like to volunteer please contact me via e-mail with the dates you are able to attend. It is not necessary to attend each of the three nights. Like the October event, space is limited, so please respond as soon as you can to guarantee your spot.

Details:

New volunteers: please plan on arriving at the Seligman Field Station (Directions Below) at 6:00PM on the first night you plan to attend. This will give us an opportunity to meet everyone, fill out paperwork, and go over some pertinent but simpletraining. After training, we will head to Boquillas Ranch PICA Camp and partner you with experienced spotlighters.

Returning volunteers: please meet us across from Pica Camp gate, mile marker 123 west of Seligman on rte 66, at 7:30 PM. You will be assigned your spotlighting teams, vehicle and gear at this time. If you feel like you need a spotlighting refresher course, feel free to attend the training at 6:00PM at the Seligman Field Station. If you do not wish to drive out to Pica Camp, then please meet us at the field house at 7:00PM.

Please plan on providing yourself with a personal headlamp and/or flashlight. Also, if anybody has a GPS unit, please bring it for your own use. November nights can be very chilly dipping down into the low 20’s, so I would recommend extra layers of warm clothing, including long johns, raingear, a warm hat and gloves. I also recommend bringing plenty of food and drinks to get you through the night, even a thermos of hot coffee or cocoa. If you are assigned to a backpacking team, when you finish you may want to bring a change of under shirts as the sweat can chill you upon return to the vehicle. Other things that you might want to bring include binoculars, and a camera.

Below is some motel information. There are additional motels, and a KOA in town.

The entire crew looks forward to working with all of you!

Directions to the Field Station

From Phoenix: Take I-17 North all the way to Flagstaff. When you get to Flagstaff take I-40 west towards Los Angeles. See Directions from Flagstaff below.

From Flagstaff: Take I-40 west to exit 123. Make a right off the exit, heading west on Route 66. As you come into Seligman, the road will widen into 2 lanes each direction. Make a right onto Floyd Street (there is a blue library sign pointing right onto this road). Go one block and make right onto Picacho. The Field Station is the last house on the right where the road dead-ends.

From Kingman: Take I-40 east to exit 123. Make a left off the exit, heading west on Route 66. As you come into Seligman, the road will widen into 2 lanes each direction. Thanks again,
Adrianna
