Steve and Lois Hirst will lead a hike to Red Mountain this Saturday covering volcanism, plant life, history, and culture. Meet at the Red Mountain parking area at 9 am. This is approximately 30 miles north of Flagstaff on highway 180 toward Grand Canyon. The hike is an easy
one, less than 3 miles, and takes you into the apparent heart of a volcano. We should be back at the parking area by 11:30. Bring water and good walking shoes and keep an eye on the weather.

The next day, Sunday, John Westerlund will lead an Inner Basin hike
focusing on Basques, aspen carvings, and the history and beauty of the heart of the Peaks. This hike will be somewhat more demanding because of the 9000-foot elevation but not overly so. Bring water and good walking shoes. Meet at the Lockett meadow campground upper parking area at 9:30 am. Drive north from Flagstaff on highway 89 to the Sunset Crater turnoff and go left across the highway onto the gravel road and follow the signs for Lockett Meadow. Should finish by 11:30. Really watch the weather on this one.
By popular demand, we are adding a new hike. On Saturday, August 27, Heidi Strickfaden plans to lead a hike into the Lava Tube northwest of Flagstaff. Stay tuned, and we'll provide details. Weather should not be an issue for this event, unless the roads get sloppy.
