New Flagstaff Program Looking for Citizen Stewards

P.O.S.T
- Parks - Open Space - Trails -

Is a new citizen steward program that is being done through the Flagstaff Parks and Recreation Department. This is an opportunity for Flagstaff citizens to participate in keeping our wonderful community amenities of parks, open space and trails at the peak of their usefulness for everyone's enjoyment. Those who care about our community assets will now have the opportunity to be the "eyes and ears" for the Parks and Recreation Department.
So What Exactly is P.O.S.T.?

It stands for - Parks - Open Space - Trails = P.O.S.T.

The plan is to encourage residents of Flagstaff to become stewards for our public recreational facilities.

We've all seen it. Unnecessary vandalism in our public spaces has become a major problem for the city of Flagstaff. Not only does it offend the senses of residents it costs us all money and gives our city the appearance of being unkempt and poorly maintained.
We all have a favorite spot in one of our parks, along the Flagstaff Urban Trail System or in our many open spaces. The P.O.S.T. plan is to enlist members of the public to accept responsibility for a specific section
of these valuable places and be the "eyes and ears" for the city to provide a layer of protection.
No, we're not being ask to act like law enforcement or perform heavy duty repairs. Our mandate will be to enjoy a selected public space and while doing so report problems to insure that location will remain a pleasant experience - not only for ourselves but for others as well.

Example:
Section of FUTS in Thorpe Park from Bonito to Thorpe Road.
If you selected that part of the FUTS all you would have to do is walk or ride a bike along that section of FUTS a few times a month and report signs of vandalism (if any) pick up stray litter and/or make suggestions for improvements. It's called "community caring" and when it catches on in our city - Flagstaff will become an even better place to live.

This coming Saturday 19 May 2007 there will be a short meeting at City Hall for those interested in becoming a part of the P.O.S.T. solution. The meeting will start at 9:00 AM and will cover the details of this program and will include a short training course.
For more details contact the Flagstaff Parks and Recreation Department at 774 5281.
Won't you join us in this effort? If we don't care about our own community who do we expect will?
