Spread the word! If you have family, friends, or colleagues who are interested in the environment, tell them about the rewards of becoming a Master Naturalist/Watershed Steward! The University of Arizona Coconino County Cooperative Extension is now taking applications for the 2007 program, which is scheduled to begin September 13. This 12 week program will cover the basics of birding, climatology, forest health, geology, stream ecology, wildlife habitat, water quality, watershed management practices, environmental interpretation and other topics. Applications are due by September 5. Early submissions are encouraged—space is limited!
Classes will meet on Thursdays beginning September 13 from 1:30 to 5 PM at the Coconino County Extension office, located at 2304 N. 3rd Street. After successfully completing the program, those who wish become certified Master Naturalists and Watershed Stewards are expected to contribute 40 hours of volunteer service. There are a wide variety of approved service opportunities available with a number of local organizations, agencies, and non-profits. Volunteer opportunities have included condor monitoring, building bat ramps, and leading interpretive tours! The cost is $160, $40 refundable after completion of the 40 hours of volunteer service. Some “work-for-class” type scholarships may be available.
