Xeriscape Classes Being Offered
A series of classes on Xeriscape, a low-water method of landscaping, is being offered at Coconino Community College this spring. Developed by the Flagstaff Xeriscape Council, these classes will teach you the horticultural principles of Xeriscape so that you can create an inviting, colorful, and low-water use landscape. For registration information call (928)526-7644.
The first class in the four part series introduces students to the concept of Xeriscape. In Xeriscape I - Concepts and Principles, students will gain a general understanding of all seven principles of Xeriscape and how to apply these principles to their own landscapes.
After learning the principles of Xeriscape, students can move on to the second class in the series, Xeriscape II - Soils, Mulch, and Compost. This class will cover soil analysis and soil improvement through the addition of organic material, mulches for water savings and weed control, and the basics of composting.
The 3rd class in the series, Xeriscape III - Water Management, deals with water use and conservation. Participants in this third class will learn about proper irrigation scheduling and maintenance, landscape water audits, alternative water sources and methods to reduce water waste.
Using native and other drought-tolerant plants can significantly reduce water use in your landscape. Xeriscape IV - Plant Selection will introduce you to the many native and low-water use plants that are appropriate for our region and aide you in choosing plants for the many varied habitats found in and around Flagstaff.
The four part series will be repeated so if you aren't available for four weeks in a row, you can still attend all the sessions. Xeriscape I will be offered on both April 1 and April 29. Xeriscape II will be held April 8 and May 6. Xeriscape III is on either April 15 or May 13, and Xeriscape IV will be April 22 and May 20. You can sign up for any or all of the four part series. Individual classes cost $20 but if you sign up for the series, the fee is only $65. For more information or to register, call 928-526-7644. All classes will be held from 9:00 am to noon at the Lonetree Campus of Coconino Community College.
