Olivia White Hospice Garden Project

On Thursday 5 of our regular volunteers worked in the garden. Karen Kent, Linda Daugherty and Leslie Penick all worked in the gazebo area deadheading roses and putting emitters on the drip system. Linda and Nancy Palmer took down birdhouses off the trellis screen to put away for the winter. Marcia Lamkin and Nancy worked in the faerie garden cleaning and storing hardscape pieces for the winter. They also filled the two remaining birdbaths and feeders. We are looking for a couple of large boxes and packing material to store the teapots in for the winter. If anyone has a good recommendation for a solar heater for birdbaths please let us know. The two baths we have are not near any electrical power.

I spent my Thursday in Tucson at the Master Gardener University seminars. They were wonderful and I got many new ideas even though we were in desert country. We learned about the latest research in tree rings, water and soil, entomology, plant pathology, shade greenhouses and hydroponics. We were also able to visit the campus Arboretum and Herbarium and the Pima County Demonstration Gardens. It was a day and a half of very educational Master Gardener information - walking and not just sitting as with most conferences.

Thank you this week to:
Nancy Palmer and Marcia Lamkin or their continuing work in the Faerie Garden.
Nancy Palmer for filling in for me - coordination of activity
Karen Kent, Linda Daugherty and Leslie Penick for deadheading roses and continuing
to add emitters to the drip lines.
Linda and Nancy for work on the birdhouse trellis.

Plans for 11/1/07 - 9am-12pm:
Repair sand and edging along Rose Garden walkway (post drip installation)
Continue installing drip emitters in the Rose Garden and surrounds
This will continue for the next several weeks if you want to learn how to do this it is a
good opportunity to practice.
Continue to mulch the gardens as needed for winter
Putting away garden art items
Cleaning tools

We hope to see you on 11/1 in the garden. Parking is at the First Congregational Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Road. If you have questions please contact Loni Shapiro at 522-8635 or maxmaddy@infomagic.net.

Thanks,
Loni Shapiro
