Arboretum at Flagstaff April Schedule

Tuesday, April 1st is Opening Day at the Arboretum. Several events will mark opening day.

In April and May the visitor center will display the original pencil illustrations by Diane Iverson for the children's book "Rascal: The Tassel-Eared Squirrel." Join author and NAU Biology Professor Sylvester Alred on opening day at 4:00 pm to find out everything you ever wanted to know about local squirrels. The program is free.

On Saturday, April 5, Diane will be available from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm to sign books and share her drawing techniques.

In addition, on April 1st the Raptor Program returns for daily shows. Friday through Monday, visitors can enjoy dramatic free-flight shows. Tuesday through Thursday, raptors will be represented at learning stations, and visitors can view birds up close and talk to handlers one-on-one. Visitor are welcome to observe training sessions on those days. All programs focus on natural history, ecology and habitat conservation.

April events also include Arbor Day.
On Saturday, April 26th the Arboretum will celebrate Arbor Day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with free admission for all visitors. Along with the regularly scheduled tours of the gardens at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, and Raptor Programs at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm, special guest naturalist Dennis Jex will have a snake display from 9:30 am ro 4:30 pm. Test your knowledge of snakes with educational games and quizzes. Dennis will have live specimens for folks to see up close.

Gardens Director Brian Keeley and Gardens Manager Nathan McLeod will host a mass tree planting operation at Willow Wash from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Groups and individuals are invited to help plant sapplings and tree plugs along the newly landscaped area. This is a great way to leave a lasting memory in the gardens that you can visit for years to come. Also, learn the best tree planting techniques in the process. There is no need to RSVP for the activity, just show up in sturdy shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, and they will provide the necessary tools.

If you would like to be a regular volunteer at the Arboretum don't forget to attend Volunteer Orientation. Applications may be sent to Volunteer Coordinator, or call (928) 774-1442, ext.101. The 2008 Volunteer Orientation takes place on Wednesday, April 16 and Wednesday, April 23, from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
