Olivia White Hospice Garden Project

Earthday - planting an aspen tree. Photo by Loni Shapiro

On Saturday, April 19th, we celebrated Earth Day in the garden with a crew of volunteers that were solicited by the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Offices. They did the advertising and we ended up with more than 20 people. They ranged in age from 12 to over 65. Many were inexperience gardeners, but they were able to complete all the work posted and even more.

An Aspen tree and a juniper shrub were planted.
The north patio was weeded, resanded and cleaned.
A very large rose was moved to a sunnier spot.
Cinders were removed from Switzer Canyon Drive, and the inferno strips cleaned and dead plant material removed.
Trees had their wells improved and were fertilized.
The birdbaths were brought out, cleaned and filled.
A bluebird house donated by Nancy Palmer was put up.
Bird feeders were filled.
Walkways and patios were swept.
Dead plant material and pine needles were bagged and removed.
The compost pile was worked.
Weeding was begun.
The raised beds were sanded and re-stained.

A big thanks for all who helped. We still have much to do this spring but we have a great start thanks to the Flagstaff community.

Cynthia Katte and Karen Kent, two of our regular gardeners came and help supvise the work.
