Olivia White Hospice Garden Project

The garden summer flowers are at their peak after the rains this week. Accumulation was minimal (1/4 inch) but rain provides all those trace elements.

Thursday was a very hot day in the garden but we had a good turn out of volunteers. Linda Guarino came and added drip lines to new plants in the Inferno Strip. Karen Kent worked the compost pile, pruned some dead branches on the roses (hopefully the last time), and gathered flowers for pressing. Marcia Lamkin worked on cleaning up flower pots in the gazebo, weeding and moving mulch. Vicki Goodwin did her usual hot jobs weeding, moving mulch to the beds and pruning an overgrown cat mint. Elsie Ellis watered the back garden and did some sweeping. Crys Wells and her sister from Phoenix came with their mom Gloria Bradshaw, and weeded while finishing off the Inferno Strip with mulch. I spent most of my time cleaning out the greenhouse and watering the back garden.

We had several visitors. Laura Davis stopped by to borrow the wheelbarrow to work in her own yard. Nancy Palmer came and took home our prizes for the garden party. Doug Grant stopped by to get instructions for working a table at 1st Friday Art Walk and to remind us to make sure all paint and related items are stored in the shed and not the garage (fire safety). Zane and Dave brought residents from the house out to enjoy the warm weather, sunshine, and gardens.

New blooms:
More roses, larkspur, Mexican hat, primrose, lilies, Maltese cross
Tomatoes and grape buds on the vines

Come join us this week on Thursday any time betwee 7am-11am. It is so warm that we will quit early. Come for any or all of that time. Our plans include watering east gardens, cleaning bird baths and feeders, moving the remaining compost pile into the beds, weeding the beds in front of the house (Norm Erickson's beds). Park in the 1st Congregational Church lot on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive. Bring a hat, gloves and any tools you prefer (we do have both) and sun screen (it should be hot). We will provide water and snacks.

Thanks,
Loni Shapiro
