2008 Flagstaff Xeriscape Contest

Purpose:
The intent of the Flagstaff Xeriscape Council is to promote the use of Xeriscape principles including native and drought tolerant plants. Our goal is to raise awareness by recognizing and rewarding people who have created landscapes that are water efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

Xeriscape Principles:
• Water conscious landscape design
• Reduction or alternatives to water dependent turf
• Use of native and drought tolerant plants as seen in Flagstaff Fabulous Plants brochure
• Incorporation of water-harvesting techniques
• Soil improvement and appropriate use of mulches
• Appropriate and efficient irrigation methods (including grey water systems)
• Conducive to wildlife habitat

Entry Requirements:
Contact Ellen Ryan at the Flagstaff Water Conservation Office for an applicattion (see below).
On a separate sheet please provide responses to the following statements & questions, a sketch of the area with a description of the location for consideration and, if available, up to 3 photographs of the area. Only landscapes within the city limits are eligible.
1. List key plants included in your landscape
2. Describe irrigation methods used
3. What is the function of the area used? (Play area, entertainment, relaxing, hobby)
4. How has water been reduced?
5. Who designed the landscape?
6. Who installed the landscape?
7. When was the landscape installed?
8. Describe how you have incorporated Xeriscape principles in your landscape

Entry must be received by July 11th. Judging will held the end of July. The Xeriscape tour, in conjunction with Arizona Native Plant Society, Flagstaff chapter, will occur Sunday, August 24. The self-guided tour will be from 10 am - 2 pm, with maps available August 18th at: local nurseries, both library branches and the Flagstaff Visitor's Center.

Awards will be given for:
• Residential Self Installation
• Residential Professional Installation
• Commercial Installation

1st Place prize ~ Award plaque, gift certificates to Flagstaff Native Plant & Seed and Warner's Nursery, plus a one year membership to the Arboretum.
