Olivia White Hospice Garden Project
On our regular Thursday workday most of our time was spent in beginning to thin the many iris in the garden. We have a huge black bag on our back porch that is free for the taking. Take as many iris as you want. Karen Kent and David Hockman headed up a crew that included Linda Guarino, Nancy Palmer and Marcia Lamkin. We only tipped the iceberg just working in the Rose Garden. The work will continue next week and probably throughout September. Linda also did some drip repairs, Nancy watered and cleaned the sun room, and Marcia watered. Gus Delgadillo did his usual care of the birdbaths and feeders and did some watering. I spent my time keeping people busy and cutting some of our flowers. Tomatoes were taken to the Coconino County Fair yesterday and today I prepared 10 entries for Floriculture.
Marcia brought the nighthawk she is caring for and it decided to sun itself. Once in the sun it just spread wings and closed it's eyes. We provided one of our grasshoppers to suppliment it's food, but it was a bit large unfortunately.
On September 11th many of our regular crew will be heading to A-1 Mountain to gather rocks for our planned Rock Garden for next spring. We will have a coordinator in the garden that day if anyone is interested in working. Tasks include watering, weeding and deadheading. If you know how to thin iris that can also be continued. Karen Kent will leave some instructions.
New blooms:
Mostly fall asters and the cauliflower is beginning to form a head. We have one large eggplant, many peppers and an onion.
Events:
Coconino County Fair entries Aug. 29th-Sept. 1
Harvest lunch:
We will probably have our annual lunch with food from the garden on the 18th of September after our regular workday. Bring something made from garden harvest or Sunday market
Thank you:
Joe Harte for watering Norm Erickson's beds
Come join us this week on Thursday any time between 7am-11am. It is so humid and warm that we will probably quit early. Come for any or all of that time. Our plans include watering east gardens as needed, cleaning bird baths and feeders, deadheading, weeding and thinning iris. Park in the 1st Congregational Church lot on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive. Bring a hat, gloves and any tools you prefer (we do have both) and sun screen (it should be hot). We will provide water and snacks.
Thanks,
Loni Shapiro
