Olivia White Hospice Garden Project

It looks like fall is on it's way. Our fall asters are in full bloom in the garden, and some leaves are beginning to change on the low-grow sumac. Evenings have been much cooler with some frost sensitive herbs curling up over night. The 2nd crop of chard and lettuce seems to be growing twice as fast as the 1st, sensing the changing weather.
On Thursday, we had a small crew that continued to thin Iris. David Hockman continued to dig up the irises and Linda Guarino, Marcia Lamkin and Crys Wells separated them and replanted 5-6 in each area thinned. WE HAVE MANY FREE IRIS AVAILABLE IN BAGS ON THE SOUTHEAST PORCH OF THE HOUSE. COME HELP YOURSELF. Al Katte stopped by to pick up our sign for the Native Plant Society contest. He will mount it and it will be put on the property as a reminder of all the hard work everyone has done to make this a beautiful garden
We entered 15 items in the Coconino County Fair and won 13 ribbons. In Floriculture we had 6 - 1st place and 2 - 2nd place ribbons. In Agriculture we had 2 first, 2 - 2nd and 1 - 3rd place winner. The fair had more entries this year, probably due to all the rain this season. The season started late because of the late frosts, but the rain made up for the late start. If you haven't entered your flowers or vegetables in the county fair you should think about doing it next year. It is easy, fun, and the rewards are both in pride and financial benefit. We made enough to buy some bulbs to plant this fall (about $30).
New blooms:
Mostly fall asters, phlox and leaves beginning to change on the low-grow sumac.

Harvest lunch:
We will probably have our annual lunch with food from the garden on the 18th of September after our regular workday. Bring something made from garden harvest or Sunday market.
Thank you:
Al Katte for mounting our Native Plant sign
Joe Harte for watering Norm Erickson's beds and repairing our drip line
Joanie Abbott's crew (Jorge) for doing some drip repairs and making sure our system was up and running
Come join us this week on Thursday any time between 8am-12pm. Come for any or all of that time. Our plans include watering east gardens as needed, cleaning bird baths and feeders, deadheading, weeding and thinning iris. Our regular crew will be on A-one Mountain gathering rock for our rock garden, but Chrys Wells will be in the garden to work on Iris, so come and join her. Park in the 1st Congregational Church lot on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive. Bring a hat, gloves and any tools you prefer (we do have both) and sun screen (it should be hot). We will provide water and snacks.
Thanks,
Loni Shapiro
