Olivia White Hospice Garden Project

On Thursday, before the rain fell, we managed to thin some yarrow/iris/germander, spray some roses for aphids, move a bird feeder, fill the birdbaths, clean and organize the compost area, plant a shrub and a plant, water (if only we knew), and deadhead. Our regular crew was in attendance - Karen Kent, David Hockman, Gus Delgadillo, Vicki Goodwin, and Marcia Lamkin. One of our new comers Carol worked on the roses. Al Katte came early and cut a trellis for the gazebo and mounted it. It will help keep the bush clematis outside the gazebo next season. It also provides a little shade and privacy in the gazebo.

We are finally done thinning iris for the season and someone will bring what is left to the MG barbeque on the 28th to share with all.

New Blooms:

The Maximillion sunflowers are finally blooming and the pineapple sage is about to burst.

Thank You:
Joe Harte for continuing to water for Norm Erickson and for painting some stumps of the dreaded Russian elm that were taken down in recent weeks.
Al Katte for cutting and putting up our trellis in the gazebo.
Joe will be on vacation for a couple of weeks and several regular volunteers have stepped in to fill his shoes (Cynthia K, Nancy, Vicki, Crys).

Harvest lunch:
We will have our annual lunch with food from the garden this week after our regular workday. Karen is bringing chili, Carol some of our vegetables roasted, Vicki green salad, Loni tomatoes & mozzarella and kohlrabi slaw, David tea, Gus lemon pie. Bring something made from garden harvest or Sunday market to supplement if you want to join us.

Come join us this week on Thursday any time between 8am-12pm. Come for any or all of that time. Our plans include watering east gardens as needed, cleaning bird baths and feeders, deadheading, weeding, working on putting plants in the sun porch for winter and adding drip to some new transplants. We are also beginning planning for the rock garden which will be planted in the spring. In the next week or so we will head to Fort Tuthill to get mulch for winter, particularly for the roses. Park in the 1st Congregational Church lot on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive. Bring a hat, gloves and any tools you prefer (we do have both) and sun screen. We will provide water and snacks.

Thanks,
Loni Shapiro
