Olivia White Hospice Garden Project
Last Thursday, we had several of our regulars (Leslie Penick, Nancy Palmer, Marcia Lamkin, Gus Delgadillo) and some new Master Gardeners (Crys Wells, Gloria Bradshaw and her husband Gordon, Vicki Goodwin, Linda Guarino and Joe Harte). We continue to work on putting away the garden for the winter. Our water feature was cleaned and put away along with the tea garden pots. We deadhead some taller plants and cut back iris. Mulch was added to many parts of the garden by Leslie. Nancy, Marcia, Vicki and Crys planted many spring blooming bulbs - tulips (regular and species), narcissi, snow drops, squill and hyacinth. Last of all we watered all the shurbs and trees. We have been doing this weekly because our days are still very warm. We have seen new growth on perennials when deadheading. All the hummingbird feeders have been replaced with suet feeders for the winter.
On Saturday I spotted three mule deer (correction by Joe Harte) munching close to the garden. Wish I had a camera, but we had a couple of children visiting their grandma who were able to see them before they took off up the canyon towards the peaks (north).
Blooming:
Not much is left of flowers or changing leaves with the hard frost.
Thank you:
Belated thank you to A & A Treecutting for a large load of chipped pine for mulch. The smell is intoxicating - Christmas in October.
Come join us for what may be our last official day in the garden on Thursday the 30th. The Soroptomist are still planning on puting in a brick pathway the 1st week of November, but other than watering on occasion our work will be done for the season.
Jobs include:
Finishing mulching, planting bulbs and probably watering. Most of our hard scape has been put away, but we still have some furniture to move and tools to clean. We will be in the garden from 9am-12pm. Come join us.
Thanks,
Loni Shapiro
