Olivia White Hospice Garden Project

On thursday, we had many of our regulars helping Joanie Abbott from Foxglove Gardening and her crew put in the last of the drip in the west gardens. Helping to dig and move transplants were Marcia Lamkin, Gus Delgadillo, Vicki Goodwin and myself. Karen Kent, David Hockman and Crys Wells all worked on mulching the roses for the winter. The last of the geraniums were moved on the sunporch. Gus filled feeders, cleaned the hummingbird feeders and I put out suet for the winter. The YMCA is beginning to get ready for building on their property just north of hospice so trees are coming down and construction beginning.

We had our 2nd annual harvest lunch with potatoes and brats as the featured lunch. Joanie Abbott's crew joined us for a delicious lunch.

On Saturday we had a crew of six from the Grand Canyon Youth Corp. They finished mulching our roses in anticipation of the hard freeze. They also weeded, picked the last of the tomatoes and cleaned their pots, deadheaded some perennials and put away the dalhia bulbs.

"In the garden, Autumn is, indeed the crowning glory of the year, bringing us the fruition of months of thought and care and toil. And at no season, safe perhaps in Daffodil time, do we get such superb colour effects as from August to November."
- Rose G. Kingsley, The Autumn Garden

Come join us for our last month in the garden for 2008. Still on the agenda is:
Mulching some parts in the garden
Working on a design for the rock garden
Putting away hardscape for the season
Deadheading some perennials
Planting some fall bulbs
Staining some benches ?
Getting the compost pile ready for winter
Weeding

We will be in the garden every Thursday Morning through October from 8-12pm weather permitting. We have one more Saturday workday scheduled on Oct. 25 from 9-12pm. Come with a hat and sun screen and any tools you like to use. Park in the First Cogregational Church lot on Turquoise.

Thanks,
Loni Shapiro
