Master Gardener Training for 2009

Master Gardener Program Begins February 4th

The University of Arizona Coconino Cooperative Extension Office will offer the Master Gardener Training Course this spring. This is the 19th year for the program. Classes start February 4th and continue every Wednesday for fourteen weeks with a week off for spring break. Class meets from 1:30-4:30 pm at the East Flagstaff Community Library located at 3000 N. 4th Street.

Topics in the course include botany and plant nutrition, soil, vegetables, plant problem diagnosis, greenhouse and propagation, insect identification and control, pruning, native plants, water conservation, tree fruit, composting, urban forestry, Xeriscape, and ornamentals. Classes are taught by University of Arizona extension faculty, staff and Master Gardeners, as well as other local professionals.

After successfully completing the program, participants contribute their knowledge in fifty hours of volunteer community service, becoming a Certified Master Gardener within this year long program. The Master Gardener program is offered throughout the United States with local growing conditions and requirements emphasized.

The cost of the course is $250.00 with a $50 rebate upon completion of the volunteer portion of the class. The Arizona Master Gardener manual and handouts on high elevation gardening are included in the price.
