Olivia White Hospice Garden Project

Catalog photo. A mixture of these are already blooming in the garden at Olivia White.

The garden has already begun to bloom. Most of the snowdrops and crocus are finished, but we have Siberian squill, iris, daffodils and species tulips blooming throughout the garden.

Our third planning meeting for the 2009 season was held on 3/26/09 at the home of Joe and Susan Harte.
Plans for April include:
April 18th participation in Earth Day
8:30am - 11:00 am
Weeding, general clean-up (sweeping and pruning for those with expertise), re-sanding walkways and patios, digging holes for 2 new trees, sanding and re-staining raised beds, re-staining redwood benches, and bringing out hardscape and bird feeders and baths.

April 30th Yearly Orientation to working in the garden
9:00 am - 12:00 pm
The orientation will be from 9:00 am - 10:00 am and will include a tour of the garden. Following a snack, Marion Lopez will give a demo on pruning roses. This is a regular workday so you can help prune or work on other clean-up activities in the garden.

If you want to help, come with hat, sun screen, and any tools you like to use. We do provide tools and water in a large container. If you want to carry water with you bring your own container. NO PARKING AVAILABLE AT THE HOME. Please park at the First Congregational Church lot on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.

Plans for this season include:
Work on two new gardens. A Rock Garden near the gazebo and a Moon Garden adjacent to the arbor bench and path put in last year.
Continuing work on our Native Garden.
Updating the front of the house for more efficient water use.
Shelving our greenhouse by fall.
Adding more educational materials. We have just finished a Scavenger Hunt for children and plan to add educational materials to the Native and Tea Gardens.
Fundraising and publicity will include a 10% day at Warners, an end of summer open house, and participation in the Coconino County Fair.

Our regular workday is on Thursday from 8am-12pm beginning April 30th. We will also be in the garden on the 3rd Saturday of each month beginning with Earth Day on April 18th - through September. If any of this interests you come and join our regular crew for orientation on the 30th of April or call/e-mail Loni Shapiro.

"If Spring came but once in a century, instead of once a year,
or burst forth with the sound of an earthquake,
and not in silence, what wonder and expectation there would
be in all hearts to behold the miraculous change!"
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
