Earth Day Activities

Volunteers for Earth Day visiting from Tuba City. They sanded our raised beds in preparation for staining as one of their many jobs. Photo by Loni Shapiro.

The Olivia White Hospice Home garden hosted volunteers for Earth Day for our first official day in the garden. We had a crew of 10 who accomplished a great deal in just 2 hours. Raised beds were sanded, the back patio was leveled and sanded, 3 tree holes were dug and 2 trees planted, weeds were pulled, tree signs posted, bird baths placed, bird feeders filled, and the Faerie Garden began to come to life again with all it's statues and whimsical features.

Many bulbs are flowering throughout the gardens (species tulips, hyacinths, dafodils and Siberian squill). These new to the garden species tulips just bloomed today and were spectacular. If you want to know more about them and other tulips from Turkey/Afganistan check out Hattie Braun's article from a couple of years ago on the MG blog (highelevationgardening.arizona.edu).

We will be hosting an orientation and our first official workday on April 30th at 9am. On that day we will start the orientation for those interested in working in the garden this year at 9am and plant a tree for Norm Erickson at 10am. Norm started the original gardens at the home even before the home was built. The planned work for the day is pruning Roses and Marion Lopez, a local rose expert, will be there to demonstrate and help those who want to learn.

Come join us in the gardens for our 2009 season. Wear appropriate attire - sun screen, hat, and gloves. You can bring your own pruners and we do have a limited supply in our storage area. Parking is not available at the home. Park in the 1st Congregational Church lot on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.

Thanks,
Loni
