Olivia White Hospice Home Workday 4/23/09

On Thursday our regular crew had their first workday in the garden. Al Katte arrived early and completed several repairs as well as setting up our copper fountain. Leslie Penick and I left at 830am to pick up a truck load of composted manure from Karen Myers east of Flagstaff. While we were there she gave us a beautiful painting done with the Plein-aire artist's last year at Olivia White. It will hang in the home when framed.

While we were out and about Linda Guarino picked up a couple of loads of soil from Landscape Connection. When she brought it to the garden it was unloaded and Karen Kent, David Hockman, Al and Linda created the foundation for our new rock garden.

Marcia Lamkin came and began deadheading in our Switzer Canyon beds. She and Nancy Palmer spent the rest of the morning taking out the Faerie Garden hard scape, hanging wind chimes, and getting bird houses ready for the trellis screen.

Crys Wells arrived and began deadheading in the east gardens.

Leslie picked up a tree we are planting for Norm Erickson and it took many of us to unload it. It looked like a small tree in the nursery, but the root ball was huge and we had all we could do to just get it out of the truck. The root ball was wired with heavy guage wire we were unable to cut so Flagstaff Native Plant and Seed will be contacted to help us plant. Sometimes it is better to leave it to the professionals when you have a crew of aging gardeners with back issues.

Last of all Dana Prom Smith stopped by with Roxie and delivered a load of Black Gold for our sitting raised bed.

Thanks You:
Karen Myers Manure and Oil Painting
Dana Prom Smith For a load of Black Gold for our vegetable bed
Linda and Leslie For helping us with your trucks
Al, David, Karen, Marcia, Nancy, Crys, Linda and Leslie for all your hard work.

Upcoming Workdays:
30 April - Orientation for new volunteers, pruning roses and ceremony honoring our first gardener - Norm Erickson
May - Every Thursday from 8am-12pm and Saturday May 23rd 9am-12pm

Come join us for the 2009 season. Things are never dull and you can learn a great deal about high elevation gardening from the variety of master gardeners and the many trees, shrubs and plants we have. You can come for any or all of the scheduled time. Bring a hat, sun screen, gloves and any tools you like to work with (we also have tools and gloves but our supply is limitied). Parking is not allowed at the home. Park at the 1st Congregation Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.

The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.

Thanks, Loni Shapiro
