Olivia White Hospice Garden Workday 5/21/09

We had a little rain on Thursday but managed to get some work done in the garden. Linda Guarino and Carol Leaseworked on installing drip sprayers in one of our front gardens. Barbara Phillips, Crys Wells and Leslie Penick all worked on weeding. It was the perfect day for weeding with the cloud cover and the wet ground. We had 1" in our rain gauge from Wednesday so no watering needed to be done. Carol Leasealso filled the bird feeders and cleaned the baths. I planted some moon flowers, started the "Moon Garden" with a few hardy plants and planted the last group of veggies and flowers from the Flagstaff CSA (broccoli, cabbages, herbs and some flowers). Sorry no photos this week with rain off and on.

New plantings:
Broccoli, cabbages, parsley, cilantro, and nasturtiums from the CSA
Moonflower seeds
White plants for the Moon Flower garden - heather, Baby's Breath, wild candytuft, creeping phlox.

New blooms:
More iris
Native primrose

Problems:
Liliacs came and went within 2 days along with many of our flowering trees?
All columbine throughout the garden leafless with stunted flowers. Hattie Braun feels this may be the Columbine sawfly and that if we spray (Safer soap or if you prefer stronger chemicals) that the plant will bloom again (photo later when the rain stops).
First appearance of grasshoppers especially in the fragrant tea garden.

Thank you:
Joanie Abbott and her crew for continuing help on the drip
Hattie Braun for advice on garden pests
Zane and David for making gardening at Olivia White even more fun

Upcoming Workdays:
May - Every Thursday from 8am-12pm

May 28 - 8am/12pm Agenda
Weeding - beds south of gazebo, Norm's beds east of the inferno strip and in the front of the house
Work on drip lines to front beds
Plant 3 new rose bushes
Watering as needed
Move a small common juniper

Come join us for our regular Thursday workday. Things are never dull and you can learn a great deal about high elevation gardening from the variety of master gardeners and the many trees, shrubs and plants we have. You can come for any or all of the scheduled time. Bring a hat, sun screen, gloves and any tools you like to work with (we also have tools and gloves but our supply is limitied). Water and snacks are provided. Parking is not allowed at the home. Park at the 1st Congregation Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.

The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.
