Olivia White Hospice Garden Workday 5/28/09

Thursday was another busy day in the Olivia White Gardens. David Hockman (our official hole digger) and Karen Kent managed to plant 3 rose bushes that were donated a couple of weeks ago. We have decided to stop accepting rose bushes as we have over 50 in the garden now, and they require to much care and water. We will only accept replacement roses for those lost. David and Karen also transplanted a common juniper badly damaged this winter to an area below our main east beds. It will be replaced with a smaller flowering quince.

Al Katte came and continued to make repairs in the garden for us - working on signs and our copper fountain. Barb Philllips and Crys Wells worked on weeding our front beds, and Crys also planted a few plants in the Inferno strip and worked on tree suckers. Gus Delgadillo took care of our birds (feeders and baths). Carol Lease and Leslie Pennick both worked on the roses (pulling back mulch and feeding). Marsha Lamkin worked on red runner beans and planting some replacement annuals and perennials throughout the garden. I spent my time working on the new Moon Garden. It will have many annual and perennial white flowers visible in the evening from the arbor bench.

We had lots of visitors today. A group of women from Hodge Podge came to place a brick for Ginny Kadel, one of their co-workers. They will also be dedicating a small Butterfly-Hummingbird Garden for her in the next couple of weeks.

Dave Hill and Zane as usual brought out many residents from the house to enjoy the beautiful morning.

The Scavenger Hunt game for children is completed and Al has posted our box that holds game sheets and pencils. Prizes are available in the house for those that complete the game.

You can come for any or all of the scheduled time. Bring a hat, sun screen, gloves and any tools you like to work with (we also have tools and gloves but our supply is limitied). Water and snacks are provided. Parking is not allowed at the home. Park at the 1st Congregation Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.

"In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day.
No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them."
