Olivia White Hospice Home Workday 5/14/09
On Thursday we had a large crew of regular volunteers in the garden. It was a beautiful day - not a cloud in the sky - and the temperature was perfect. Julie Holmes arrived early and worked on dead heading and weeding. Laura Davis came and began work on cleaning up and making some changes in the Faerie Garden. Al Katte did his usual magic with his tools. He put up our second trellis in the Gazebo, a sign near the Faerie Garden for our scavenger hunt for children, and helped us get the posts for the mailboxes ready. Carol Lease returned to Flagstaff from the valley and helped seal the raised beds in prepartion for planting this weekend. She also brought a cypress tree from a friend to plant in the garden. Gus Delgadillo filled all the bird feeders and baths and began cleaning up pine needles around the ponderosa tree wells. Linda Guarino finished checking the drip lines so the timers can be turned on this week. She also helped me finish digging up the 2nd Alberta spruce, spread rock and plant the tree in a pot. Vicki Goodwin and Leslie Penick worked on deadheading and weeding. Barbara Phillips watered the east gardens and brought her husband who is an arborist. He looked at the trees on the property and will be doing some clean-up work for us. He also gave us advice and moving a couple of trees. Karen Kent worked on the compost pile, did some planting in the native garden, and continued to clean-up damaged shrubs and trees.
On Saturday we had a small crew of new master gardeners - Bobette Rohanna and Mike Watkins - and they weeded and cleaned up pine needles in the Faerie Garden and area surrounding the arbor bench. They also watered and cleaned the sun room. I managed to get our vegetable bed ready for planting and planted some of the greens from the Flagstaff CSA in our standing bed and herbs in the sensory pots.
New plantings:
Sun Rose in the Native Garden bed
Transplanted some extra Palmer's penstemon to native garden
Spinach, choi and lettuce in the standing bed, scented geranium, lavender, and rosemary in the aroma pot, and flat leafed parsley, alpine strawberry and nasturtium in the taste pot.

You can come for any or all of the scheduled time. Bring a hat, sun screen, gloves and any tools you like to work with (we also have tools and gloves but our supply is limitied). Water and snacks are provided. Parking is not allowed at the home. Park at the 1st Congregation Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.
The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.
