Olivia White Hospice Home Workday 4/30/09

On our regular workday this week Marion Lopez came and helped us prune more than 40 roses. She had help from some of our regular crew Karen Kent, Linda Guarino and Leslie Penick, and we have several new master gardeners that also learned and helped. The master gardeners were given a tour and orientation to the gardens. At 10:00 am a bristlecone pine was dedicated to Norm Erickson the first lone gardener at Olivia White. He began the garden long before the home was built. Laura Davis just returned to Flagstaff and stopped by to help dedicate the tree. The gardens that Norm created are all along Switzer Canyon (Turquoise) and directly in front of the home. He retired last year at the age of 87 and we will miss all he did to keep the gardens beautiful.

Gus Delgadillo came and filled birdbaths and feeders and did some repairs and tree work. Crys Wells did some dead heading and pruned some roses. Nancy Palmer came with her sister-in-law and began to hang birdhouses on the trellis. Marcia Lamkin did some dead heading and work in the Faerie Garden.

New Blooms:
Nothing new this week but after watering last week the green has begun to return to the garden with perennials sprouting.

Newly Planted:

Come join us for the 2009 season. Things are never dull and you can learn a great deal about high elevation gardening from the variety of master gardeners and the many trees, shrubs and plants we have. You can come for any or all of the scheduled time. Bring a hat, sun screen, gloves and any tools you like to work with (we also have tools and gloves but our supply is limitied). Parking is not allowed at the home. Park at the 1st Congregation Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.

The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.
