Olivia White Hospice Garden Workday 6/4/09
Thursday turned out to be a perfect day for gardening. The temperature was down and the cloud cover helped for all those working without shade. Al Katte was the first to arrive as usual. He put up the new signs for the Pate's trees, checked out our peviously leaking fountain, and posted another mailbox for general info about the garden. The two used mailboxes that Karen Kent painted have added much to the garden hardscape. One is posted in the Native Garden, and the other general garden information box at the entry to the Rose Garden. Karen Kent did her usual good job at pruning our shrubs that were damaged this winter. David Hockman planted a donated juniper and helped us move some very large rocks in the front of the home. Linda Guarino continued her work with the help of Carol Lease on installing drip to the front garden. Barb Phillips came and weeded in some of the front garden beds. I managed to plant pots in front of the home, in several beds, and began getting the gazebo pots ready.
Kellie the house manager brought her children to check out the Scavenger Hunt. They stopped by to thank me - saying is was fun!
In the afternoon the Upward Bound group came for the 2nd time this week and watered, weeded, planted, and filled bird baths and feeders. They are a nice group of young people from throughout Arizona who will be helping us twice a week for the month of June.
New plantings:
Ginny Kadel's Buttterfly/Hummingbird Garden with many penstemons, monarda, and agastache
Color hanging pots for the gazebo (geraniums, vinca and wave petunias)
Donated pots for the front of the home from Norma Jean Clifton. They were planted with elderberry shrubs, super petunia and bacopa
New blooms:
More dutch iris
Ox-eyed daisy
Mat penstemons
Problems:
Grasshoppers in the fragrant tea garden and in the coneflower

You can come for any or all of the scheduled time. Bring a hat, sun screen, gloves and any tools you like to work with (we also have tools and gloves but our supply is limitied). Water and snacks are provided. Parking is not allowed at the home. Park at the 1st Congregation Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.
"In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day.
No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them."
