Olivia White Hospice Garden Project 7/23/09
I have been traveling for a week so not sure what happened in the garden this week other than our drip system may have sprung a leak. I am so thankful for the rain the last few days because I haven't had to hand water.
Laura Davis, Marcia Lamkin and Nancy Palmerreceived awards of merit for their work on the Tea & Faerie Gardens from the Native Plant Society. The Tea garden for Sensory Impact and the Faerie Garden for Imagination. The overall winners will be published by the Native Plant Society.
Our Thursday workcrew included our regulars, a few new master gardeners, and a nurse from FMC. Laura Davis and David Hockman worked on planting some new plants in the Inferno Strip from the Arboretum. Nancy Palmer filled bird feeders and watered the sun porch. Carol Lease, David, Crys Wells and her family, myself and all the other new volunteers weeded the beds in front of the home. They were filled with ragweed and bindweed after all the rain we have had. Marcia Lamkin did some drip repairs and planted a new plant for the faerie garden. We also spent time sweeping and cleaning up after the city. They paved this week and left piles of loose cinders in our front driveway. I spent my time catching up and running from project to project and not accomplishing much.
New in the Garden:
We finally have fruit in the garden. One lone apple has appeared on our Red Delicious apple tree and many grapes on our native grape vine.
Thank you:
Our regular crew for doing such a great job and to Laura Davis, Nancy Palmer and Marcia Lamkin for their extra efforts for the Native Plant contest.
A large anonomous donation of many garden related materials
Garden problems:
A silver buffaloberry has suddenly begun to die and those on either side have some leaf loss as well. They may have too have had too much water this season?
Upcoming Workdays:

July 26th- 10am/2pm Native Plant Society Tour

You can come for any or all of the scheduled time. Bring a hat, sun screen, gloves and any tools you like to work with (we also have tools and gloves but our supply is limitied). Water and snacks are provided. Parking is not allowed at the home. Park at the 1st Congregation Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.
"Dirty hands, iced tea, garden fragrances thick in the air and a blanket of color before me, who could ask for more?"
