Olivia White Hospice Project 7/30/09
The 25th of July we held our monthly Saturday workday. I only had one volunteer (Julie), but we managed to get a great deal of work done in preparation for the tour on Sunday. We watered, weeded, swept, and did some deadheading of lamb's ear that has extended out onto our walkways.
On Sunday July 26th we participated in the Native Plant Society Garden Extravaganza. We had a very good turn out on a beautiful day to visit gardens. We only had a few drops of rain. Our only problem was parking as usual. Laura Davis spent time showing her contest entry - the Tea Garden. She also provided iced mint tea and lemon balm tea. Many people asked for the lemon cookie recipe. Just google Martha Stewart and Lemon Poppy Seed Cookies. Marcia Lamkin and Nancy Palmer showed their entry the Faerie Garden. Many children and adults participated in the Scavenger Hunt. Thanks to all who came to see our special garden.

On our usual workday, Thursday, we had a large crew (10) of AmeriCorps volunteers to help us. They worked on a very weedy area at the corner of Switzer Canyon and Turquoise (mostly clover and ambrosia), they stained 4 of our glider benches, and helped create a new pathway from the tea garden patio to the native pathway. Two of them also came by on Saturday to continue the work. Our regular crew Marcia Lamkin, David Hockman, Laura Davis, Linda Guarino and Carol Lease helped supervise the volunteers and managed to get more done. They watered, weeded, planted some new plants in the inferno strip, dug a couple of holes for new plants and shrubs, and filled the bird feeders and baths. Bethany and Charlotte also stopped by and helped water. Carol's husband came by and fixed a hole in one of the mailboxes.
We also had several visitors. Zane, the golden retriever, was back from his vacation looking for our fox. He had a great time in Colorado swimming, fishing, and just sitting around the campfire, before retiring to his sleeping bag . Catherine Sickafoose stopped by to let us know she has an art show at Brandy's in August. Ray and Joan White (Olivia's grandparents and house donors) stopped by with friends to visit the garden and home.

Things are never dull and you can learn a great deal about high elevation gardening from the variety of master gardeners and the many trees, shrubs and plants we have. You can come for any or all of the scheduled time. Bring a hat, sun screen, gloves and any tools you like to work with (we also have tools and gloves but our supply is limited). Water and snacks are provided. Parking is not allowed at the home. Park at the 1st Congregation Church on Turquoise just past Switzer Canyon Drive.
"August rushes by like desert rainfall,
A flood of frenzied upheaval,
Expected,
But still catching me unprepared.
Like a matchflame
Bursting on the scene,
Heat and haze of crimson sunsets.
Like a dream
Of moon and dark barely recalled,
A moment,
Shadows caught in a blink.
Like a quick kiss;
One wishes for more
But it suddenly turns to leave,
Dragging summer away."
