Open Source at the UofA

Open Source (OS) software has become a standard implementation tool for many kinds of software. Here at the UofA we are on the brink of major changes to how we are providing many online services and OS is playing a prominent role.

Here is some brief information on some of the OS initiatives that are under way at the UofA.

1-The Sakai Project is a collaborative initiative to create an open source Learning Management System. The University of Arizona is participating in the Sakai Project in the Sakai Educational Partners Program. More information at http://www.sakaiproject.org

2-EPortfolio from OSPI will be used on the campus to provide an electronic portfolio that can be used by both students to track academic progress and by faculty to assist with the tenure and review process. More information at http://www.theospi.org

3-InstructorLink (ILink) is a service of the Learning Technologies Center (LTC) in partnership with the Office of Student Computing Resources (OSCR) and other support units of the University of Arizona. InstructorLink brings together tools and information useful in the teaching process at the University of Arizona. Using NetID, InstructorLink enables a single login to be used for access to WebMail, EmployeeLink, and course management tools such as Desire2Learn & Polis. Information provided here includes: a) Announcements on upcoming workshops, system changes, training opportunities and other activities of interest. b) Syllabus tool to assist in the construction of an online syllabus. c) A link to the bookstore for online textbook ordering d) Feedback, comments and suggestions capability. ILink uses UPortal software, and OS provided by JA-SIG http://www.ja-sig.org

4-An Open Source solution is being considered not only for academic issues at the UofA, but also for administrative functions such as financial services. More information on issues surrounding OS can be found at http://chronicle.com/indepth/infotech (you may have to login to the Chronicle to access this site)
