LTC Technology Outreach

Learning Technologies Center staff members have been taking their knowledge of Internet technology on the road, offering their years of experience and insight to groups interested in taking advantage of the technologies.

And they can do the same for your organization.

Transforming Ideas

This past August and September Jan Knight, Wayne Brent and Stuart Glogoff have been the featured speakers at a Lunch & Learn Tech Series put on in partnership with Cox Communications, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona and The University of Arizona Continuing Education and Academic Outreach. Entitled "Increasing Community Outreach with Today's Internet Technologies," the workshops have been geared toward non-profit organizations, grassroots community groups and government representatives to help them learn more about reaching and building communities online.

Knight presented information on Internet Marketing Strategies, including the use of Websites, e-mail newsletters, usability testing, viral marketing and surveys as well as search engine strategies, using advanced Web search techniques and the use of metatags. Other strategies include indexing Web sites, writing content, getting paid advertising and tracking site visitors.

Brent discussed what emerging technologies are on the other side of the horizon or just coming into view, including Mashups — websites that use content from more than one source to create a completely new service — and GeoTagging — the process of adding geographical identification information to various media such as websites, RSS feeds or images.

Other Internet trends include:
• More powerful, smaller computers
• Easier Internet access
• Prolific Internet resources
• Decreasing costs
• Moving from accessing information to participation in developing and sharing content
• Convergence of technologies and information.
• Cell phones to WiFi
• Meeting Tools

Glogoff contributed information on community outreach through blogging and podcasting, with a focus on defining and using both to advance the needs of an organization. He discussed how to economically set up a blog and create a podcast. Both can effectively be used to get an organization’s message out and keep conversations alive.

LTC staff members are willing to share their technology knowledge with your department or organization. Call the LTC at 626-2621 for more information.
