D2L usage continues to grow at UA

Usage of the UA’s course management system, Desire2Learn (D2L), has increased significantly during the past several semesters.

Number of students and courses up

For the Fall 2005 semester, 682 courses were taught using D2L by 1404 instructors to 37,302 students. The numbers represent students and instructors in multiple D2L classes. In Fall 2006, by contrast, 973 courses were taught using D2L by 2008 instructors to 51,071 students. That’s a 43 percent increase in course usage and a 37 percent increase in the number of students using D2L from one year to the next.

Ninety nine departments used D2L for Fall 2006 courses. Total University enrollment for Fall 2006 was 36,805, according to the UA Office of Enrollment Research.

Summer Session, too

The only other comparative numbers for D2L usage are from Summer Session II. In 2005, there were 43 courses being taught by 81 instructors to 1065 students, compared to 56 D2L courses being taught by 109 instructors to 2095 students in summer Session II 2006. The number of instructors includes teaching assistants and multiple instructors per class.

D2L enrollment numbers for the Spring 2006 semester include 712 courses being taught by 1456 instructors to 36,962 students. The Spring 2007 D2L enrollment numbers look to keep the upward trend in tact.

The UA’s previous course management system, WebCT, had at its high point of usage roughly 250-300 course sites and 14,500 users. WebCT was discontinued after the first summer session of 2004 as D2L came online.
