Classics Collaboration
Mike Martelle, the LTC’s lead graphic designer and 3D specialist, has for three years been collaborating closely with Dr. David Soren, regents’ professor and archaeologist from the Classics Department.

Dr. Soren originally sought out the LTC for assistance in developing a 3D visualization of an Chianciano Terme, Italy archeological site where he has been excavating for over 12 years. The site features an ancient Roman bath facility and adjacent structures including what is believed to be an administration building and an additional Trajanic bath from a later period.
The focus for Martelle this year has been: A) implementing a low-polygon version of the site for viewing in AZ Live, the UA’s virtual reality installation, B) refining the site topography, C) adding roads previously found using geophysical prospection from Ground Penetrating Radar, D) constructing the trapezium wall surrounding the bath area, and E) adding more refined texture details to the site.
Other developments in this past year included the publication of Dr. Soren’s book about the first seven years of the excavation and the recruitment of Marvin Landis from Research Computing for his expertise in converting geometry and manipulating textures in the virtual reality environment.
