Student fees helping change the face of campus IT
Student fees are often controversial and last year’s proposed increase in the information technology (IT) student fee was no exception.
Faced with a coming increase, the Associated Students of The University of Arizona (ASUA) and Graduate & Professional Student Council (GPSC), with the help of the Office of Student Computing Resources (OSCR), quickly formed the IT Student Advisory Board (ITSAB) to look into what IT services the students wanted for campus.
In the spring of 2007, 5,320 students voted for an increased information technology (IT) student fee that included what ITSAB had determined were the students’ priorities: increased wireless network coverage, more help desk services, non-laptop equipment that students could borrow, technology refresh money for departments and more computer labs. The Arizona Board of Regents accepted all of ITSAB’s recommendations.
The fee was imposed for the Fall 2007 semester and the IT Fee money is already in action.
Places you'll see the IT Fee money in use this semester include:
- UAWiFi — The University's wireless network has been expanded over the summer to every residence hall on campus. By the end of this academic year, UAWiFi will cover nearly all of campus
- Help Desk — OSCR's pilot Mobile Help Desk to the residence halls was highly popular. The fee will continue Mobile Help Desk during peak demand, as well as provide IT help on the Mall at the beginning of the semester
- Digital equipment — OSCR has seven additional digital cameras and seven additional video cameras available for student checkout with the Gear-to-Go program
