iTunes U coming to UA

The University of Arizona is about to get broad exposure due to an agreement between the University and Apple Inc. which will include the UA in Apple’s iTunes U.

The Learning Technologies Center is implementing the technical parts of the project and has a pilot version available for the beginning of Fall semester.

iTunes U at UA

So … what is iTunes U?

Apple’s iTunes U is a special area of the iTunes Store devoted entirely to education. When you visit your iTunes software, follow the link in the left hand navigation section for iTunes U to find thousands of audio and video files from colleges and universities around the country. Stanford, Duke, Penn State, Arizona State University and UC Berkeley have contributed a great deal of publicly accessible content. iTunes users are able to download public content, play the audio and video on their own computers, or sync to their iPods or other MP3 players and listen on the go.

iTunes U at the UA

UA on iTunes U will provide access to a wide range of UA digital audio and video content via the iTunes Store. Initially, the UA will offer courses, faculty lectures, event highlights, music and other programming that are open to the public. After that, we will implement an access-restricted site for the UA community that includes course-based materials and other resources available only with an authenticated UA login through WebAuth (using your UA NetID).

As we unveil UA on iTunes U, we are featuring podcasts of campus events, including the College of Science’s prestigious Evolution: Our World Ourselves and Global Climate Change lecture series, the College of Fine Arts outstanding Art and Identity, departmental podcasts from the School of Information Resources and Library Science, and the Office of Student Financial Aid's informational podcasts, OFSA On the Air.

Faculty course pages

Interested faculty and instructors can request a course page for their class. Once established, they will be authorized to manage content created for their classes through the page, such as posting class lectures or supplementary podcasts. For access-restricted courses, only students registered for the class will be able to download material. Faculty and instructors can also make assignments where students create podcasts related to their class and upload it to a “drop-box” specific to the course.

Respecting Copyright and Intellectual Property

The University of Arizona’s Learning Technologies Center is exploring the use of podcasting for non-profit, educational purposes only. All students and faculty should be aware that The University of Arizona’s policies require that copyrighted materials be used in a way that complies with U.S. Copyright Law. That means that it is important, when creating a podcast, to obtain all necessary rights and permissions for copyrighted materials you plan to use. For information and resources, see Lawrence University Copyright Issues Related to Podcasting; copyright information at the UA Office of the General Counsel; and the UA’s policy on the Acceptable Use of Computers and Networks at The University of Arizona.
