MATLAB and Simulink now available as Campus-Wide License
The MATLAB and Simulink programs — advanced, interactive programming environments — are now available at no charge for use by The University of Arizona faculty, staff and students.
MATLAB is a highly-regarded program used to solve a wide range of technical computing problems, including signal and image processing, communications, control design, test and measurement, financial modeling and analysis, and computational biology. Simulink is an environment for multidomain simulation and Model-Based Design for dynamic and embedded systems.
Now available
The package can be downloaded at sitelicense.arizona.edu/matlab. Be forewarned, however, that the download is sizable: approximately 3.21GB. It is necessary to download the software and the Personal License Passcode (license.txt), which is required for installation. If the software is being deployed on multiple departmental computers, users are asked to contact 621-4357 or visit sitelicense.arizona.edu/matlab/matlab_lab.php for additional details.
In the past, individual departments had been buying MATLAB directly from the manufacturer, The Mathworks. UA Libraries science librarians, headed by Jeanne Pfander, interim science library team leader, and Elizabeth Kline, science librarian, began looking at combining the purchases last spring, with an eye toward having the software available in the library’s Information Commons.
“It became apparent that there was an opportunity for University cost-savings by collaborating on a license with the many different labs and departments across campus purchasing MATLAB licenses,” Pfander said. Previous purchases of MATLAB were tabulated and participating colleges were asked to split the costs according to the percentage spent previously, she said. The University was given credit on existing licenses, which brought the total cost to the University down to around $150,000 for the unlimited licenses structure, she added.
Michele Norin, University CIO and Executive Director of University Information Technology Services (UITS, formerly CCIT) contributed to the funding and offered to distribute the MATLAB software from site license servers operated by UITS.
A student version of the program has been for sale at CATS, on the lower level of the Arizona Student Unions Bookstore, for $99. With the new site-licensed software, students no longer need to purchase the student version. Instead, students may download the site licensed full version of the latest release, R2007B, which includes 15 programs and 35 add-on modules, many of which are not available with the student version. The add-ons extend the programs capabilities in specific areas. Go to sitelicense.arizona.edu/matlab/matlab_products.shtml for a complete listing of the programs and add ons.

MATLAB will run on the following computer systems:
• Linux
• Linux x86-64
• Mac OS X (Intel)
• Mac OS X (PPC)
• Solaris 64
• Windows 32-bit
