LTC reaches out to K-12

LTC is working on an exciting outreach program to k-12 schools, partnering with the Cochise County school system, Arizona State Parks and the National Park Service.

In December, LTC personnel conducted a pilot podcasting workshop for Parks and School personnel to perfect our curriculum for teacher workshops in 2008.

The first series will have k-8 teachers spending a day in park gathering information for creating digital interpretive information. Another day will be spent in a computer lab in Benson, Arizona learning how to create podcasts.

The specific agenda is as follows:

  • On January 19th, 10 am to 2 pm, workshop participants will gather data, conduct science experiments and discover the answers to content, unit and essential questions at one of three parks: Kartchner Caverns for grade levels K-2, Chiricahua National Monument for grade levels 3-6, and Coronado National Memorial for grade levels 7-8.
  • On February 2nd, 9 am to 3 pm, armed with the data collected on the first day, participants will design, create, record and post a podcast. This hands-on part of the workshop is being held at the Benson High School Computer Lab.

We intend on taking this format further once we acquire funding so that we can expand this program as an opportunity for schools in Southern Arizona.

If you know of an opportunity for our outreach program, please contact Garry Forger for more information.
