OSCR increases new student outreach
The world at large is increasingly requiring refined computer skills and academia is no different.
All UA students are required to have a university e-mail address for official communications and many departments require that students have a personal computer. In addition, more individual classes are offered online, require access to online materials or utilize special software. In an environment where computer use is increasingly mandated, students need the Office of Student Computing Resources' assistance more than ever.
Starting with incoming students for the Fall 2008 semester, the University orientation staff is passing the baton to OSCR for the students' hands-on computing sessions. All freshman and transfer students spend a session creating their UA Net ID and learning how to use the WebReg online course registration tool.
OSCR is looking forward to being the face of campus computing for these new students and having the opportunity to familiarize them with other important campus tech information such as how to register a computer on the campus network and UAWiFi, the importance of computer security measures such as UA's free Sophos anti-virus software and what other resources are available to them.
