OSCR Mobile Help Desk offers in-room residence hall service

OSCR’s Help Desk now goes on the road, with in-room appointments for anyone in a University residence hall.

“This is a real help for students with desktop machines who don’t want to haul them across campus and for students with mobility issues. But really, the service is available to everyone in a residence hall,” said Christine Mathias, OSCR’s Help Desk Supervisor.

The free technology assistance is available for:

  • General computing questions

  • MAC address registration

  • Virus/spyware removal

  • Software configuration

  • Hardware troubleshooting

  • Wireless network issues

  • Computing security

  • Purchase recommendations

OSCR’s Mobile Help Desk was introduced in Fall 2005 as a pilot project funded by OSCR. On Wednesday evenings, OSCR technical consultants would set up in residence hall lobbies on a rotating basis and residents could bring their computing problems and questions to OSCR on site. In the Fall of 2006 OSCR was awarded a one-year grant by the Parents Association to expand this service to five days a week. The service was extremely popular and a year later the students of the university voted to provide OSCR with the necessary funding to continue the program via the Student IT Fee.

Now residents don’t need to wait for the Mobile Help Desk to come to the lobby; they can call the OSCR Help Desk at 626-TECH for an in-room appointment. Appointments are available Sunday through Thursday.

For the protection of both the residents and OSCR’s student workers, there are certain protocols that are observed once the consultant arrives at the resident hall, goes to a student’s room, works on the computer and leaves.

OSCR Director Limell Lawson is excited about the program. “We’re always looking for more ways to reach out to the students. This is a great way to get the help to where they need it.” The Mobile Help Desk also staffs the Computer Services tent on the Mall during Wildcat Welcome. OSCR is planning to add the Bookstore’s Computer and Technology Store (C.A.T.S.) and departmental visits in a continuing effort to serve more students.

As always, Help Desk service is also available in OSCR Underground, ILC 136, 9 a.m.– 8 p.m., by appointment Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and walk-in Tuesday and Thursday.
