OSCRtv: Student employees showcase OSCR services

OSCR now has another way to reach students living in the residence halls: OSCRtv.

The show, airing for a half-hour every other Wednesday night (beginning January 16) at 6:30 on UA’s student-run television station, UATV, is directed by media arts senior Brian Oviedo. It features animations, client profiles, short films, helpful hints and a panel discussion of current trends in technology, generated entirely by OSCR’s student employees.

“The goal is to tie the segments back to OSCR services,” said Oviedo. “Every episode is created using software, training and multimedia equipment available through OSCR to all UA students, faculty and staff.”

Tom Erickson, a media arts junior, is UATV’s general manager. “In the past, it was our antiquated equipment that was keeping the station from being all it could be,” he said. A grant allowed the station to upgrade from analog to digital. “With the equipment problem solved, we can focus on getting student-generated content.”

The new capabilities left Erickson scrambling for content and his first stop was OSCR. “I would watch these short animations created by OSCR on a monitor outside their Multimedia Learning Lab. I thought, ‘If ever I become general manager, I’m going to visit OSCR first and see if they’d like to produce a show.’”

Limell’ Lawson, OSCR’s director, remembers the first meeting with Erikson: “We were so surprised and excited about the opportunity that we said ‘yes’ without even considering how much work it would be.” With one semester’s worth of episodes complete, both Lawson and Erickson are happy with the arrangement. “We’re helping Tom grow this idea of having student-produced content on UATV and we get to tell our story to students in the residence halls, while offering our student employees an outlet for their creative energies,” said Lawson.

“It’s been a great project for me,” emphasized Oviedo. “I’ve been able to host the show, create segments, edit content and work with a great team of creative people.”

“We’re really excited about our next season,” Lawson said. “One of our student employees is creating an awesome virtual set, another is composing a theme song and we’re busy generating lots of new ideas to make OSCRtv even better.”

OSCRtv can also be viewed on UATV’s website, UA iTunes U and the OSCRtv page of OSCR’s website.
