Student Technology Preceptor Program returns in Spring ‘08
After taking a semester-long hiatus for restructuring, OSCR is bringing back the popular Student Technology Preceptor Program (STP) in Spring 2008. Changes made to content and format seek to make the program more responsive to the needs of faculty and departments while creating a richer, fuller learning experience for students.
The STP partners undergraduate and graduate students looking to augment their skills in the use of computing technologies with faculty wanting to incorporate those technologies into their coursework. Students participating in the program receive upper division academic credit for attending workshops to develop the technology and people skills necessary to assist faculty with their technology needs — whether that be developing a course web site, creating digital instructional materials or any other project — more efficiently and effectively than faculty or department personnel could do it themselves.
There are two STP courses offered through University College, 397W and 397C. UNVR 397W trains students to work with a particular faculty member in support of technology in a particular class (the STP might even be a member of the class). Faculty Class Preceptors sign up for one semester for three units of upper division academic credit that can be repeated for up to nine units.
Technology Center Preceptors (397C) make a two-semester commitment for 6 units of credit. After a semester of in-depth training, each Technology Center Preceptor will be assigned to staff one of the multimedia service units on campus to assist center clients (who may be faculty, students or staff) with whatever projects they bring in.
There is still time for faculty to submit project requests for upcoming semesters and students can add classes until January 28. There are no prerequisites but students must have Beth Harrison or Kate Rehkopf sign their ADD form prior to registration.
