UA network security changes help
The University is increasing its network security measures to help ensure that your personal records and other important data don't get compromised. Beginning this semester, e-mail will have to be accessed through secure connections, and all NetID users will be required to change their passwords. Campus community members who haven't made the required changes may find themselves unable to access their e-mail or other network services.
The changes, in particular, are:
On February 4th, 2008
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for E-mail
For all students, faculty and staff who use an e-mail client to check their e-mail (i.e., not webmail), the University will no longer allow connections from e-mail clients that do not have SSL enabled. Many of our community members have already made this change in their e-mail program's settings, but those who haven't will find themselves unable to check e-mail February 4.
There is a handy guide on how to change this setting for various e-mail programs.
Beginning February 11, 2008
Net ID Password Changes
This semester, all University community members will be required to change their UA NetID password, on a rolling schedule beginning February 11th. You will receive a notification two weeks prior to when your password must be changed. Your new password will be rated for its strength, and will be good from 45 days to a year, depending upon how secure it is. All passwords must be changed by the end of Spring 2008 semester. You can avoid forced expiration by changing your password anytime after January 26. There is more information available on UA NetID.
