OSCR orients new students
Approximately 7,000 new and transferring students came through campus this summer, getting oriented for the Fall semester.
As more campus resources have gone online, it has become increasingly important for students to know about those resources and know where to get help with them.

For the incoming Fall 2008 students, the Orientation Department and OSCR agreed that OSCR would give an orientation to campus computing resources and take the students through getting their UA NetID and University email accounts. Because OSCR would be there from the start, students would know they could come to OSCR for help with their computer questions.
UITS training specialist Melanie Cooley created a Flash presentation called Computing on Campus, which is hosted on the OSCR website. UITS staff reviewed the presentation for completeness and accuracy, while the Disability Resource Center checked on accessibility issues.
At each orientation date, new students cycled through the Info Commons in four shifts of 165 students apiece. Orientation and OSCR staff were on hand to help students with any questions. UITS staff worked in the background to make sure the account servers were handling the load of new account creation.
In addition, students learned there are computer, network, and copyright policies they need to be aware of; how to use Student Link and WebReg; where to find computer labs, tech support and workshops; and where to find information on connecting to the network.
OSCR and UITS are hoping that early exposure to campus resources and support will help students make their way through the sometimes-confusing world of University technology.
